International Virtual Birthday Cake.

Today's birthdays cross a few oceans:

Baroness and Inspector Wexford creator Ruth Rendell (aka Barbara Vine) was born today in 1930; her latest work is The Water's Lovely (2007);

A salute to our Australian friends, with the 144th birthday of Boer War correspondent and WWI major Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, best known as the lyricist for "Waltzing Matilda" and writer of "The Man from Snowy River";

American novelist and Book of the Month Club selection judge Dorothy Canfield Fisher, born today in Kansas in 1879; her books include Understood Betsy (1917) and The Deepening Stream (1930).
