The Fatal Witness (1945).

In The Fatal Witness, a wealthy woman fights with her nephew over a missing brooch and later is found dead, leaving the nephew as the prime suspect. But he seems to have a cast-iron alibi.

The film is based on a story by British author Rupert Croft-Cooke (aka Leo Bruce, the creator of the marvelous Sergeant Beef and sleuthing schoolmaster Carolus Deane). Although the story is not specified in the film credits, it may be "Banquo's Chair," which was refilmed as a 1959 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
