
Today Penguin issues a new edition of
Anna Katharine Green's
The Leavenworth Case, first published in 1878.
The Leavenworth Case, notable for its treatment of circumstantial evidence (Green's father was a defense attorney), was an early American bestseller, for it sold more than 1 million copies during Green's lifetime. British prime minister Stanley Baldwin was one fan of her books.
